Bonneville Hotshot Injured After They Were Struck By Tree On The Little Twist Fire.
Multiple fractures to the face and shoulder.
Yesterday, a Bonneville Hotshot was struck by a tree while working on The Little Twist Fire outside Beaver, Utah. Marine Corps veteran Daniel Burns was struck by a 16” BDH tree after a helicopter dislodged a standing tree on division Whiskey.
Daniel was taken by LifeFlight to St. George, Utah, where numerous surgeries took place. A fundraiser was put together by the crew and can be found here.
Here is the statement the Crew put out:
On June 23rd, 2024, Bonneville Hotshot Daniel Burns was struck by a falling tree and severely injured while fighting the Little Twist Fire on the Fishlake National Forest outside Beaver, UT.
Burns, a US Marine Corp Veteran and first year Bonneville Hotshot, was helping suppress a spot fire in Division Whiskey when a helicopter entering the area to drop water on the fire destabilized a standing tree and caused it to fall over, striking Burns in the head and shoulders, pinning him to the ground. He miraculously survived being hit and crushed by a 16” diameter tree, but suffered fractures of bones in the shoulder and face, requiring a helicopter LifeFlight to St George for numerous surgeries. While Bonneville Interagency Hotshot Crew feels blessed Burns survived, we remain deeply concerned about his road to recovery and ability to provide for himself while missing the rest of the 2024 Fire Season.
Please help us financially support him and make up for the lost wages, medical and recovery related bills, and living expenses as he fights to return to full strength.
We hope Daniel makes a full recovery, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the crew. This is a horrible thing to go through; losing a crewmember like this on the line is really rough on the whole organization.
