Body-worn camera video shows our deputies responding to yesterday’s intentional brush fire along Highway 74. Deputies were first on scene and immediately used fire extinguishers to knock back the fire until crews could get there. The JCSO Wildland Fire Management Team responded shortly after and helped douse hot spots.

Their quick action helped slow the fire’s spread and protect the area during a fast-moving situation. A Suspect Arrested in Connection with Intentional Brush Fire Along Highway 74. At about 4:46 p.m. on June 29, 2026, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man intentionally setting fire to brush near mile marker 16 on State Highway 74.

Multiple witnesses called 911 after observing a man standing over a fire on the south side of the highway. Deputies located an active brush fire in a ravine south of the highway. Deputies quickly located a suspect matching the witnesses’ description and detained him without incident.

One deputy used a fire extinguisher to slow the spread of the flames until fire personnel arrived and fully extinguished the fire. During the investigation, deputies recovered a lighter near the fire’s origin.

The suspect was identified as Royce Ben Jameson, 25, of New Mexico. He was arrestad on suspicion of the offense of Firing Woods or Prairie, 18-13-109 (2) (a), an F6, and Third Degree Criminal Trespass, 18-4-504, a petty offense. The quick reporting by community members and the rapid response by deputies and fire personnel helped prevent the fire from spreading further.

Jameson is being held at the Jefferson County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

The charges are merely legal allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent of the charges against them unless and until they are proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The purpose of this letter is to share information with fire and law enforcement personnel assigned to the Iron Fire regarding suspected or confirmed occupational exposures recorded during your assignment.

This potential exposure occurred primarily during the initial/extended attack operations on the Iron Fire and associated evacuation operations starting on June 19, particularly on June 20, 2026, during the defense of the community of Eureka, Utah. Potential exposure(s) continued during holding and mop-up activities until the morning of June 25, 2026, when the Incident Management Team (IMT), who was placed in charge of the Iron Fire, was first notified of the potential hazards associated with the Eureka Mills Superfund site and surrounding area by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

At that time, the IMT discontinued all non-critical operations activity in the area around Eureka. However, considering the unknown nature of the hazards in the area outside the Eureka Mills Superfund footprint, potential exposure may have continued within the area and for the full duration of operations on the Iron Fire. To that end, the IMT is providing you with this general notice and reference to initial safety protocols.

GENERAL BACKGROUND AND NOTICE

• The Iron Fire was located near Eureka City, Utah, which is the location of the historic Eureka Mills/Tintic mine. Mining, milling, and smelting activities from the 1870s through the 1960s left mine waste and heavily lead-polluted soil, resulting in the EPA designating the area as a Superfund site. Where the primary contaminant of concern is lead, other potential contaminants include mercury, antimony, arsenic, thallium, and other trace metals per the USGS.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ), have since completed required remedial actions within the residential areas and tailing piles in the Superfund site but lead and other contamination may still be present outside of those areas in the larger Tintic Mining District. Numerous other smaller mining sites exist in and around the Iron Fire footprint outside of the recognized Superfund designated area, presenting other potential exposures.

• The mere presence of lead and other contaminants in soil and vegetation in or around the site does not mean an exposure occurred. The main routes of exposure for lead and other contaminants in soil are ingestion and inhalation. Unless disturbed, lead and other contaminants will typically stay on the ground with little risk of inhalation. The risk of ingestion is minimized through good hygiene practices, such as removing contamination from your hands before eating.

• Firefighting activities such as dozer line construction, hand line construction, mop-up and holding operations may have disturbed lead and other contaminants in dust and ash sufficiently to create an exposure pathway in areas where there are high lead and other contaminant concentrations in the soil.

• Although some contaminants such as mercury can be taken up by plants in affected soils, mercury from soil is expected to remain concentrated primarily in the roots and is not likely to contribute significantly to employee exposures from smoke. This risk is even lower for lead.

• The highest known concentrations of lead and other contaminants were likely within the Eureka Mills Superfund site, whereas most firefighting activities took place outside of this area. High exposures to lead and other contaminants are not anticipated unless areas of higher contamination were disturbed, such as a tailings piles.

• Health effects associated with lead exposure are often due to repeated elevated exposures over several years. Possible symptoms of short-term exposure to very high levels of lead include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, bowel changes, dehydration, headache, extreme tiredness, irritability, weakness, loss of appetite or memory, and tingling or pain in the hands or feet.

• Blood lead level sampling is not typically recommended in cases of short-term exposures. Even if some lead is present in the body, it will be eliminated through natural means.

• Symptoms from exposure to mercury, antimony, arsenic, thallium, and similar metals often affect the nervous system and digestive system. Common signs include muscle weakness, tremors, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, and trouble with vision, speech, or hearing. Acute exposure can also cause coughing, shortness of breath, stomach upset, skin irritation, and sometimes a metallic taste. If you believe you have these symptoms consult a doctor.

EXPOSURE PRECAUTIONS

Responders that may have been exposed to these contaminants should take precautions to clean clothing and equipment used during the fire. These precautions are very similar to recommended standard operating procedures for responders after any fire incidents. Using wet cleaning methods, such as soap and water, to clean hard and non-absorbent items, specifically:

• Launder all clothes worn separately from other clothes,

• Clean boots with warm soap and water,

• Clean vehicle interiors to remove dust using moist cloth or towels and dispose after use

• Any vacuuming should be done with an appropriate filter to remove fine dust particles, preferably use wet cleaning methods and gloves whenever possible.

• Replace vehicle or equipment cabin air filters, rather than cleaning with compressed air,

• Replace vehicle and pump engine air filters, rather than cleaning with compressed air,

• Thoroughly wash vehicle and heavy equipment undercarriage and exterior.

• Firefighting equipment such as handtools, packs, hardhats, gloves should be washed off.

• Fire hoses and fittings used in operations should be handled with gloves and thoroughly washed and dried.

• Engine equipment compartments that have dust in them or that held equipment used should be cleaned.

• Water sensitive equipment such as radios and electronics should be wiped off with a damp cloth or per manufacturer directions.

This list of recommended precautions is not exhaustive. The goal is to remove and dispose of any deposited dirt, dust, or ash without stirring it up and to keep it from spreading into clean areas used for sleeping or eating.

INITIAL REPORTING PROTOCOLS

Employees are advised to retain this record as documentation of potential occupational exposure. Follow employer guidance on submitting this record in the appropriate reporting system. Any immediate injuries should be reported to the supervisor/employer, who will then report to the insurance carrier and adjust the claim. Additionally, federal, state, and local responders should consider the following additional employment protocols:

• State of Utah, county, city, and private employees can submit an HR-6 form “Work Related Injury/Illness Report Form”. Submissions and additional inquiries should be directed to the Utah Labor Commission, Utah Occupational Safety and Health Division and Division of Industrial Accidents (DIA). Individual firefighters that have any questions regarding the claim process can contact the DIA for assistance at (801) 530-6800.

• Department of the Interior (DOI) employees can enter this information as an Exposure in the Safety Management Information System (SMIS).

• US Forest Service (USFS) employees can submit this information into eSafety as a “precautionary or first aid” claim.

• Other responders should check with their employing agency’s exposure-reporting requirements. If these documents are submitted, employees should add information to supplement this letter with specific details of the work environment, such as dates, times, locations, work tasks performed and relevant observations

Additionally, all responders should keep their Incident Qualification System (IQS) or Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) Responder Master Record up-to-date to document the number and duration of incident responses. Law enforcement personnel should follow their agency experience record keeping process. It is also important that current and former employees maintain copies of these records.

Great Basin Team 3

Tuesday Morning update:

• We have a 2-3 hour window for aircraft to fly in before critical fire weather starts and continues into the evening. The whole county is under Red flag warning. Please be careful.

• We have dozens of spot fires in Custer County. Deputies have brought their personal chain saws (with proper spark arrestors and fire extinguishers) to help clear limbs from the county roads.

• It is also a priority to get people back into their homes or let them know of damage. As long as we safely can, Deputies will drive the neighborhoods and note an address and what level of damage they observe. This info will be shared with the homeowner/resident only at the credentials site (see below)

• We are standing up our re entry and credentials programs. Once we have that staffed and equipped we will give the location. Homeowners or residents who have been evacuated will need to bring proof of their address. This can be a drivers license or utility bill or mail with your name on it. These residents will be given a windshield placard with their zone number. As each zone is declared safe, they will be notified. We are also working with livestock owners to check their livestock.

• We had zero residents that needed to stay at our shelter in Wetmore. But we are keeping that open if you need to use it.

• The bridge across Highway 165 just north of Aspen Acres campground has been burned. We’ve requested through channels a portable bridge from the national guard. Unfortunately fire crews can’t get past this gap and have to go the long way around through Beulah. Getting this bridge open is a high priority.

Custer County Sheriff

The Colorado Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed management of the fire yesterday. The Team is working closely with local, regional and national resources that remained actively engaged in suppression efforts yesterday and throughout the night. Team Colorado’s highest priority is the safety of the public and the fire personnel.

Yesterday, Governor Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency. This verbal declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to take all necessary and appropriate actions to assist with response, recovery, and mitigation efforts.

This support includes engine and hand crews to assist in containment efforts, DFPC aerial resources, and the DFPC-sponsored Type 3 Incident Management Team to manage incident response efforts.

Current Situation: The fire made an eight-mile run off of the timber in the foothills and is burning through extremely dry grass and brush, running east. Additional resources have been ordered and are enroute.

Colorado Type 3 IMT

The fire exhibited extreme fire behavior over the past two days under Red Flag conditions. It spread primarily to the east and northeast, into the Cow Creek drainage, up steep canyon walls, and north and northwest of Hwy 550.

During the night shift, firefighters reinforced firelines around Lake Lenore and County Road 14A. The fire remained active in several areas into the night and quieted down around midnight.

Current Situation: Southwest fire perimeter just north of Ouray and east of Hwy 550 (Division A): Firefighters will continue to engage the active flame front as they construct and reinforce fireline to prevent the fire from spreading south toward Ouray and limit the fire from spreading in the Lake Lenore area.

Western fire perimeter east of Hwy 550 (Divisions B and C): Firefighters will focus on engaging the active flame front, constructing and improving firelines to keep the fire from spreading west towards Hwy 550. They will take measures to reduce impacts to structures and other values at risk. As the fire progresses to the north, it will move into steep canyons that would compromise the ability for firefighters to engage directly. This area is being scouted to determine where to construct a fireline that will indirectly confine the fire from spreading and threatening values at risk.

Northern fire perimeter southeast of Hwy 550 (Division D): Firefighters will scout for potential areas to build firelines in order to keep the fire from spreading to the north and along the Hwy 550 corridor and protect homes, properties, transmission lines, and other values at risk.

Eastern fire perimeter: This area will be scouted for potential direct extinguishment or indirect confinement suppression operations.

Rocky Mountain CIMT Team 3

The fire has experienced wind-driven growth to the northeast. Dry conditions will continue throughout the week, with low relative humidity. Critical Fire Weather conditions continue throughout the week. Fire crews continue to attempt to establish control at the origin of the fire. Aerial resources continue to provide assistance as conditions permit.

Effective today, June 30, 2026, at 12:00 PM, all Forest Service lands, roads, and trails within the Monticello Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal National Forest (San Juan County, Utah) are temporarily closed due to the Babylon Fire.

This closure is necessary to protect public health and safety during active wildfire operations. The closure is in effect through August 31, 2026, at 12:01 AM, unless conditions allow for an earlier reopening.

Effective immediately, Canyonlands National Park has temporarily closed The Needles district until further notice due to the Babylon Fire near Blanding, UT.

The Manti-La Sal National Forest Closure Order #04-10-26-05-01 is in effect for all National Forest System lands, roads, and trails within the Dark Canyon Wilderness and portions of the Bears Ears National Monument located in San Juan County on the Monticello Ranger District.

Manti-La Sal National Forest

Yesterday, crews completed roughly 169 miles of fireline. Crews went direct on portions of Thompson Ridge thanks to the moderated fire behavior and improve the dozer line from the Beaver watershed to the Cork Ridge dozer line. Masticators are working throughout the area to reduce the standing fuels. Structure Protection crews completed work in the Miner’s Park area.

Last night, low fire activity in the Cottonwood Canyon area allowed firefighters to go direct and look for new ways to engage areas of the fire.

Crews improved the dozer line and established a hose lay. Mop-up operations continue around LeBaron Meadows and Kents Lake. Today, structure protection operations continue across the fire as well as mop-up around LeBaron Meadows and Kents Lake. Firefighters will work to improve the trail from Cork Ridge into the trail systems of the surrounding Forest system where they plan to engage in direct firefighting when possible.

Great Basin Team 5

During three days of Red Flag weather, the team was able to stop the northward progression of the fire, holding the line at Forest Road 535. Monday brought a significant drop in winds which allowed them to start moving offensively against the fire.

Operations: Monday night, crews executed burnouts on the northeast and northwest perimeter of the fire. The purpose of the burnout to the northeast was to protect against the possibility that fire in the bottom of West Fork Canyon could climb out and run on the plateau. Today, more preparations are taking place in the area for primary and multiple secondary lines of defense. To bolster the primary lines, another burnout is planned for tonight. In the northwest, last night’s burnout was to stop the flanking fire that was approaching powerlines. Preparation is continuing on Forest Road (FR) 231 nearby for another burnout tonight. In that area, as well, additional contingency lines are being scouted and prepped.

On the south side of the fire, in Bear Sign Canyon and Dry Creek Canyon, crews are continuing to build lines to prevent backing fire from reaching the Seven Canyons or Enchantment Resort area. They have largely finished primary lines and are in the process of chipping slash from that operation. Work continues on prepping contingency lines in that area as well. As all this work continues, other crews are continually patrolling and mopping up lines already established on FR 231, FR 536, FR 536A, and FR 539. Initial attack groups are always ready to act alone or assist local agencies to suppress new starts. Since the drop in the winds, aircraft assist in all areas of the fire.

Southwest CIMT Team 2

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection’s Gannett Glacier Type 2 Initial Attack Crew joined nearly two dozen smokejumpers and multiple water-scooping aircraft on the Big Fire.

Nearby, the DFFP’s Pioneer Peak Hotshots, the Woodhawk Wildland Fire Module from Montana, and a dozen smokejumpers are now assigned to the Cecil Fire.

MESA COUNTY, Colo. — Federal wildland fire officials are releasing the identities of three firefighters who died while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on Saturday.

The firefighters were assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and were engaged in initial attack operations on the Knowles Fire when the incident occurred.

The deceased firefighters have been identified as:

• Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan, assigned to the U.S. Forest Service Rifle Helitack.

• Nick Hutcherson, 27 of Glendale, Arizona, assigned to the U.S. Forest Service Kaibab National Forest.

• Sydney Watson, 26, of Warrior, Alabama, assigned to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service Rifle Helitack.

Two additional firefighters were injured during the incident and are receiving medical care.

The Snyder Fire has merged with the Jones Fire and subsequently overtook the Knowles and Gore fires. All fire activity is now being managed and reported as the Snyder Fire. The fire is currently estimated at over 28,000 acres along the Colorado-Utah border.

An interagency complex incident management team has assumed command of the Snyder Fire.

“We mourn the loss of three firefighters who answered the call to protect others and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow citizens,” said U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy. “Our thoughts are with their families, loved ones, friends and crewmates as they face an unimaginable loss. The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Wildland Fire Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service are closely coordinating response efforts and providing support to the families, coworkers and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy.

A serious accident investigation team has been mobilized and is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The wildland firefighting community mourns the loss of these firefighters. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

“Today at 2PM, members of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office detected a drone being flown in restricted air space around the Iron Fire in the Southwest corner of Utah County. UCSO Deputies were able to locate the private pilot that was operating the drone, again in restricted airspace, and issue the pilot a citation.

We here are the Utah County Sheriff Office, along with our local, state, federal partners, and members of the media have repeatedly warned the public of the dangers of flying drones into restricted airspace during wildland fires and that it is unlawful to do so. Especially, how these actions require the grounding of firefighting air operations to ensure the safety of those air crews. As a point of fact, earlier this week a drone incursion caused air operations to be grounded on the Iron fire.

Under Utah Law 65A-3-2.5 it is unlawful to fly a drone into restricted airspace around an active wildland fire. A violation of that law is punishable by fines and potential imprisonment. If you are found violating this law, you will at the minimum issued a citation or potentially booked into the Utah County Jail depending on the totality of the incident.

Do not fly a drone around any wildland fire.”

SPECIAL BULLETIN – JUNE 25: We can now confirm that the serious incident involving a Bird Dog aircraft near Fort Simpson was a crash.

Three people were onboard the aircraft. The aircraft was supporting wildfire suppression efforts on fire FS009-26.

The RCMP attended the site in the evening as part of a coordinated response with ECC to launch an investigation and confirm the status of the aircraft’s occupants.

No further information on the occupants is available at this time. More information will be provided when available.

Great Basin Team 5 assumed control of the fire today at 6 a.m. Yesterday, extreme fire behavior was fueled by drought conditions, high temperatures, and low fuel moistures. Last night, dozers and hand crews created fire line in the City Creek area.

Crews on the east side will engage in structure protection today, as well as fire line construction where they can. On the west side of the fire, firefighters worked around the backside of the fire to build fire line which they will use as an anchor to build continual line from. Today, firefighters will continue establishing fire line and engage in structure protection. Crews will be working day shifts and night shifts, establishing 24- hour fire coverage.

Crews from Rocky Mountain Power are working to clear downed power lines from Highway 153 and will be brushing around power lines ahead of the fire on the east side. Several aircraft have been assigned to the incident and will be utilized across the fire. A structure assessment team is being established to assist the county with structure inventories.

Fishlake National Forest

Last night, firefighters engaged in a firing operation on the Eastern flank of the Iron Fire. Crews successfully utilized this tactic to stop an eastern run the fire was making through the Pinyon Canyon area. Today, crews will continue direct extinguishment activities throughout the fire area, with an emphasis on the Eastern flank firing containment line.

Additionally, crews will continue to improve the work that has been accomplished in proximity to the town of Eureka, better solidifying the safety of the community moving forward. Crews will continue to be present during the dry lighting and high windstorm that is predicted to enter the fire area in the afternoon.

Great Basin Team 3

The Grapevine Fire remains active in steep, rugged terrain within the Clover Mountain Wilderness Area. Firefighters continue suppression efforts using a combination of direct and indirect tactics, including strategic firing operations, aviation support, and strengthening existing containment features.

Over the last several operational periods, firefighters completed significant burnout operations near the Bunker Pass, Mud Springs, and Pine Wash Road areas to remove fuels ahead of the fire and improve containment opportunities. Crews continue to secure those completed operations while scouting additional opportunities to strengthen containment in difficult terrain.

Nevada Type 3 Incident Management Team 4 will assume command of the Grapevine Fire tomorrow morning. Incoming personnel are currently participating in transition briefings to ensure continuity of suppression efforts and firefighter safety.

Nevada Type 3 Incident Management Team 4

Yesterday, smokejumpers were able to create an anchor point at the heel of the fire and are working to keep the fire on the west side of the Gros Ventre River. Other resources began setting up structure protection around Darwin Ranch.

Firefighting resources include a type 3 helicopter, air attack, smokejumpers, fire engines, and other support staff, with over 50 firefighters working to suppress the fire. Additional resources have also been ordered and will arrive today.

Fire managers are implementing direct extinguishment and indirect confinement strategies on the Kinky Creek Fire. A Type 3 incident management team has been ordered to help with firefighting efforts and should arrive by this evening.

Bridger Teton National Forest

Tuesday, several spot fires were detected across Forest Road 231 to the north of the main fire perimeter. Night shift was able to suppress those immediately, the largest of them reaching a half-acre. Fire managers are preparing the entire perimeter of the fire for expected extreme fire behavior expected this weekend.

Tuesday, crews continued work on Forest Road 231 to provide a robust firebreak. In Oak Creek Canyon, hotshots built a handline and reopened lines established during the 2014 Slide Fire. Other crews built containment lines to the south of the fire to protect values closer to Sedona. Additional dip tanks were placed in strategic points in the fire area to supply helicopters with water.

Aircraft, whether dropping retardant or water, cannot by themselves extinguish a growing wildfire. They give firefighters on the ground time to prepare measures to defend against further fire spread. The current Pocket Fire footprint is too steep to safely put firefighters on the ground. In addition to keeping ground crews out, this terrain makes aircraft less effective. Tuesday’s localized winds and lightning strikes suspended aerial operations. Forecasted storms later this week could also force additional suspensions of aerial operations.

Southwest CIMT Team 2

The Shingle Creek Fire is now estimated at 614 acres. Fire behavior has been moderate, but steep terrain continues to challenge firefighters. Crews are actively working across the fire area supported by engines, suppression modules, multiple Type 1 helicopters, and a Large Air Tanker (LAT).

Temperatures are expected to steadily increase over the next couple of days. A cold front is forecast to move through the area on Friday, followed by a significant low‑pressure system this weekend into early next week. This system is expected to bring cooler temperatures and widespread precipitation.

The Northern Rockies Team 1 is anticipated to assume command of the fire on Thursday morning.

“Eureka remains under evacuation status. Firefighters actively engaged the fire overnight, including a successful backburn operation on the north side of town.

Thanks to federal, state, and local responders, Juab County Emergency Management, the Red Cross, law enforcement, and all those supporting this effort.

Crews will continue assessing conditions and conducting burn operations today to strengthen and secure fire lines. Power remains out in Eureka and will be restored once safety assessments are completed.

A Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT) will assume command of the fire today at 6 PM.”

Iron Fire

“Last night, crews conducted a strategic firing operation on the northwest corner of the fire. Crews plan to spend Sunday holding and strengthening dozer line constructed and continuing the dozer line in northwest direction. Crews are scouting areas directly adjacent to the lower edge of the fire near its origin for opportunities to contain the lower edge of the fire.

Aviation resources will continue working on the eastern perimeter of the fire, and firefighters positioned at both Slide Rock State Park and Seven Canyons Golf Club are working to protect values at risk in Oak Creek Canyon.”

“The City of Anderson remains under a “GO!” evacuation order. Residents are advised to leave the area immediately if they have not already done so.

The Starry Fire (#234) was reported on June 20, 2026, at approximately 6:08 PM near the City of Anderson. Fire activity increased rapidly after initial detection. Local fire departments and Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection responded. As of the last report, the fire is estimated at 700 acres.

Ongoing suppression efforts include helicopter bucket operations, water-scooping aircraft, and retardant tankers, along with ground crews. Fire crews remain actively engaged, and response efforts will continue.”

“The Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team has officially assumed command of the Bonneville Fire.

Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) remain in place, and unauthorized drones or aircraft in the area can significantly impact firefighting operations.

Smoke will remain visible throughout the city and surrounding communities for the foreseeable future. Individuals sensitive to smoke should stay near air purifiers or filtered indoor environments, and wear a properly fitted mask if spending time outdoors.”
