On Today’s Show:
A major announcement was made today by the Department of the Interior and the United States Department of Agriculture. The DOI has announced the creation of the United States Wildfire Service, which unifies all its wildfire programs.
While the new USWFS awaits full unification with the United States Forest Service fire management organization, the two departments will increase the use of existing authorities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of wildland fire management across all involved agencies.
A new fire chief will be appointed for the USWFS “promptly.” They note the new chief of the USWFS must possess appropriate wildland fire management experience commensurate with the position.
Joint memos went out from both Departments, which I cover in full. This includes the unification of aviation and vehicles, modification of geographic regions and boundaries, PPE, unification of position descriptions, pay, benefits, prescribed fire, post fire actions, and the use of predictive services to deploy and position resources before wildfires break out.
