As I reported on this week’s podcast, a BLM firefighter sustained second-degree burn injuries to the hands, wrists, and face while suppressing the Conner Fire on the BLM Carson City District.
At the time of the incident, the engine crew was assigned to hold and secure the fire edge along a mountain road when erratic, high winds caused a sudden and dramatic increase in fire behavior, exposing one crewmember to flame and radiant heat.
The crewmember was assessed on the fire by paramedics then transported via air to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV where treatment began and transferred via ground to UC Davis Medical Burn Center in Davis, CA for treatment of second-degree burns.
A fundraiser has been established to help cover lost wages going forward and to support the family. Here are further details from the fundraiser:
Hello,
My name is Ella, writing this on behalf of my teammate and his family.
Riley is a 25 year old assistant captain who has been fighting fire for 6 years.
He is an outgoing, courageous, strong, and hard working individual. Everyday spent with Riley is a day with laughter and fun because of his upbeat personality.
His wife Risa, a dispatcher and wildland firefighter, is also a significant pillar in our community and is loved by everyone she meets.
Unfortunately, on June 20th Riley sustained burn injuries while performing initial attack on a fire. Due to the extent of his injuries, he will not be able to return to work for the rest of the year. Risa is taking time off to be by his side, helping him in every way possible.
A wildland firefighter earns 70-80% of their annual income between the months of May and October. With Riley injured and Risa providing care, this Gofundme was created to alleviate any financial stress and unforeseen expenses during his recovery. 100% of the money donated to this fundraiser will go to Riley and Risa.
Despite his injuries, he is in very high spirits and continues to have a positive outlook on the future. We appreciate your time for reading Riley’s story, and are immensely grateful for any donations and support!
