High Level Resignations And Mass Layoffs Begin In The Forest Service Just 24 Hours After The Deferred Resignation Closes.

3,400 non-fire employees let go.

On Today’s Show:

It was announced late this afternoon that up to 3,400 non-fire employees inside the Forest Service will be laid off now that the deferred resignation window is closed. Employees let go were inside the probationary period, and some had secondary fire supporting roles.

Employees said to be exempt in the agency include wildland firefighters, law enforcement officers, meteorologists, and bridge inspectors. I have spoken with multiple people who have received employee lists for termination.

There have also been high-level resignations today, with the Intermountain Regional Forester Mary Farnsworth announcing her departure. I’ve heard more are expected.

These layoffs follow an announcement on February 11th to undertake large-scale reductions in force for employees not mandated by statute. There are reports that up to 200,000 probationary employees across all government agencies were let go.
