KMAX Helicopter Crashes While Working On The Gold Mountain Fire In Colorado, Killing One.
The Aircraft went down in the Silver Jack Reservoir.
There is more tragic news coming out this morning from a Colorado wildfire after a KMAX helicopter crashed into the Silver Jack Reservoir yesterday evening, while conducting bucket work on the Gold Mountain Fire.
After the aircraft went into the water, the Sheriff's Department dispatched swift water rescue divers to the scene. By late last night, the divers confirmed that they had recovered the body of the pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft.
The Kaman K-MAX helicopter is a specialized, single-pilot heavy-lift helicopter used for repetitive external cargo operations, such as aerial firefighting. Absolutely horrible news, and an incredibly tough few weeks for the wildfire community in Colorado.
An investigation is underway, and further information will be released when available. The Gold Mountain Fire outside Ouray, Colorado, remains one of the more active fires in the state, now 36,258 acres, and 13% contained.
