Before we jump into our workout this morning, let’s recognize one of the biggest badasses in the industry. Last week, Beckwourth Hotshot Superintendent Mike Wintch was honored as Superintendent of the Year. Here is the write-up from the California National Forests:
The 2023 Stanley Stewart Award - Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) Superintendent of the Year:
Congratulations to Mike Wintch, the 2023 Stanley Stewart award recipient! Mike began his Hotshot career with the Redding Interagency Hotshots in 2009 and was awarded the Don Sterrett Atlas Award that same year. The award is presented to the Redding IHC crewmember that displays the most physical and mental toughness, stamina, and dedication to the Redding IHC. During his IHC career, he also proudly worked with the Beckwourth Interagency Hotshots on the U.S. Forest Service-Plumas National Forest. From 2014 to 2023 he served as the Superintendent of the Beckwourth IHC.
A shining example of duty, respect, and integrity throughout his career, Mike Wintch continues to be a valuable asset to the IHC community and wildland fire as an instructor for the Wildland Apprenticeship Program, assisting in the development of future leaders in the fire service and as a mentor to those that follow him.
The Stanley Stewart Award honors the life and legacy of Stanley Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a longtime Hotshot with the Los Padres IHC
(1974-2010), a founding member of the U.S. Hotshots Association (USHA) and the Association's first President-elect.

Congratulations to Mike and Beckwourth Hotshots! The U.S. Hotshot Association has its annual meeting in Boise, March 15-17th.
We had a couple of fires over the weekend, giving us an indication of what the spring might look like. Colorado had a 100-acre river bottom fire, Ohio popped a fire, and Michigan had a couple of IAs as well.
All small, but a clear indicator that there is no snow in these areas, very dry in the Great Lakes states. British Columbia had a small IA from an escaped debris pile, and many fires are still smoldering across Canada. The spring fire season may be a busy one across these areas. I’ll break down the spring potential on tomorrow’s podcast and much more.
Ok, workout time! So find yourself a good soundtrack or podcast, and let’s get it done.
Get loose and dynamic stretch until warmed up. If you need to adjust some of these numbers, that’s ok; just push yourself.
