On today’s show:

After the Yarnell Fire tragedy, two brothers, Engineer Rodger and Wildland Firefighter Derek Gossen, developed a weather, location, and communication device to aid fire managers, overhead, and crews in better situation awareness on the line. The DropBlock is currently being ground tested in Arizona, The Pacific Northwest, and in other states and by multiple agencies.

Yarnell Fire 2013

Rodger specialized in Avionics Engineering on corporate jets and was responsible for the thorough design and management of the avionics package and certification process. Rodger also holds an A&P license. His brother Derek has been in the fire service since 1998, working his way through the ranks of Firefighter, Driver/Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, and Acting Battalion Chief. He has been active on wildland fires since the 1999 season. In the federal wildland world, he has Squad Boss, Engine Boss, Strike Team, and Task Force Leader along with ICT4 qualifications. He has been deployed across the nation on many different wildfire incidents.
