Yea, this is already going political. Having a hard time explaining to people how a municipal water system can get nuked the way this did as well as the mechanics of uphill slope, pipe friction, passive pressure system, etc.

It’s a giant science project basically… but many no longer understand science.

No fan of CA management, but the reality is this is just one of those things. Once it hit the residential in those winds nothing was stopping it. Dresden event.

PS - I believe the water draw in HI was shut off to a pineapple plantation south of town that was on a separate source. They requested additional water, but it was denied. (the wind was in their favor, so...)

I believe the failure in Lahaina was a small system (single 1 mil gal tank) and everything got blown wide open, hence the depressurization. It was a downhill flow system.

There are all kinds of weird ideas about these fires particularly from those who don't live in CA or haven't lived here long enough to experience some pretty vicious Santa Ana winds and associated fires. They seem to believe that in the face of 80+mph winds they can just drown the flames with no mention of how fast the fire moves and the embers ahead of it.

As always, thanks for all you do. You are so appreciated. BTW: Dunno if you saw it, but there was a great guy on Nicole Wallace today (MSNBC) discussing how federal firefighters shouldn't be left out of the healthcare or pay equity loop etc. I was really glad to hear it. I did not catch his name as I came in just after it was mentioned. It was 2pm (pst) hour.

Great episode and thanks for the update, I've fought fire in Malibu (inmate crc) and it's tough under the best circumstances.

Almost makes me wonder how much those buckets that belong in the pump kit cost, if you could find em on gsa or fedmall... I bet they're probably more than a purse. 😆

Good information thank you👍

This was a great episode! So many things to think about out. Your humor was great, needed some of those reality checks. The firefighter perspective, and your advocacy for the profession is being heard (hopefully by people who can make a difference). What this show points out is that what we’re currently doing (in all ways) is not working, especially the hotshot crews living in a city park! Thanks for keeping it real

Thanks for your coverage! I am recommending to others. The insurance question is a bit confusing.. is there a list somewhere of what insurance pays for and what FEMA pays for when a disaster happens?

I think that will all still be decided in the days and weeks coming up, but I will try to stay updated on it.

Quote:

Nearly 10 years ago, researchers concluded that weather (mostly the Santa Ana winds) and the spatial distribution of built property were the key determinants of risk in the southern California landscape: “adequate planning of the changes in the built environment…is going to be vital for managing risk from fire under future climates.”

Do you see what's wrong with that quote?

I appreciate all your updates. I'm a subscriber. I easily look past your political leanings but you're going to criticize an outgoing, elderly president, and you're not going to talk about the dumb sh** that Tr&mp and his partner Musk have said about climate, the recent fires and U.S. firefighters (my own son and a future son-in-law included). I'm not an expert, but good luck with all those climate deniers and making any impact on wildfires, besides throwing money at it for the next four years.

To be fair, all I said was his comments were tone deaf.

I voted for neither. I have no horse in the political arena.
