I was in Alberta about a month ago and we had a black bear charge one of the crews. It harassed them for over and hour and we even had a type 2 helicopter drop two buckets on top of the bear to run it off. It showed back up a few hours later and tried to get into a couple crew trucks before one of our helicopters ran it off again.
Last week I read an article from Alaska Fire Service regarding Karelian Bear Dogs joining a firefighting team on the Twelvemile Lake Fire. I had never heard of these dogs before. They sound like amazing animals, so brave.
A fit firefighter with a Pulaski and teammates with chainsaws seem to work well too😳…. Just a little too close for comfort.
My daughter tells me that they have firearm training every spring. And in the late spring, after big fuel reduction projects, especially in Gates of the Arctic, we get pictures showing how they keep themselves safe ( electrical wires around their tents….) along with pictures of all the grizzly bear paw prints that show up around their camp😳
Wow! That was quick thinking and use of available tools. We hit a bear (cub) in the crew carrier once but the bear was cool and just looked at us and ran off.

Pretty creative way to scare off a bear!
Musta took the “How to Fight a Grizz” in Aglearn.
Glad to hear the leads. OK pretty bad ass basically sticking a stick in the grizzlies mouth.
Wow!

Bear dogs are a great idea in Alaska. I know the my also carry firearms up there.

Whoa. Hope he/she is okay.
Quick thinking with the pulaski.
Use what you got.
I’m sure he/she will have a great “there I was” story to tell.

Tough little bear.
