Should we use military helicopters? Definitely. We flew firefighters transport missions, and conducted medical extractions, to and from remote helispots, using National Guard, Black Hawk helicopters, on the 2000 Cave Gulch Fire - Helena NF. The speed at which these machines can quickly move crews to distant, elevated drop points, offers a notable and unforgettable tactical advantage. They were made for this business. Still not a fan of squeezing a Type 1 helicopter, with an entire crew on board, into inherently tight helispots…Remember the 2008 “Iron 44 Fire”.
